Build the workshop process before accepting a customer vehicle. Tool coverage, diagnosis, competence and an identified original data set matter as much as access to a file service.

01
Prepare the equipment and skills
Confirm a suitable workspace, diagnosis tools, supported flash protocols and the required power supply. Understand the tool provider’s read, write and recovery instructions for the selected ECU.
02
Arrange the development connection
Provide tool and licence information and confirm any Master binding. Discuss file format, pricing and the information required for a complete first order.
Record original data, hardware and intended use. Keep the written version, diagnosis and relevant measurements together, and use that evidence when asking for revisions.
A practical starting point is the work your workshop can identify and support confidently. Review the vehicles you already service and the controllers your current or planned equipment can access. Choose an initial scope around that evidence rather than presenting every available option as a service you can immediately deliver. Unfamiliar enquiries can still be discussed before a booking is confirmed.
The vehicle database helps structure the conversation about models and engines, while the actual file decision requires ECU identification and original data. Keep those roles separate. A reference power figure is not proof that your device supports the read or that the customer's vehicle is in a suitable condition for the proposed work.
Learn the file handover before accepting a deadline
Understand how your chosen device supplies data and how the development partner returns the edited file. Confirm whether you are using a Master or Slave configuration, what the current binding is and which formats can be exchanged. Review the relevant manufacturer procedure for the first controller rather than assuming that all OBD, bench or boot jobs follow the same process.
If you are buying equipment, make the intended vehicle range part of that decision. Ask about the protocols, licences and accessories needed for the work you expect to handle. A device comparison is useful when it leads to a specific supported workflow; it is less useful if it is treated as a promise that a brand name covers every controller.
Before the first write, establish how the workshop will store the original file, identification and delivered versions. Use a reference that follows the vehicle from booking to verification. Record hardware changes and known previous software so the development brief reflects the actual starting point. If the source is a virtual read, identify it as such rather than treating it as a copy of everything currently installed.
Decide who checks the delivered filename and who records the version written. That responsibility matters even in a small business, because later enquiries may be handled by someone who did not prepare the original upload. A simple, reliable record is more useful than a collection of files with ambiguous names.
Explain to the customer that the appointment includes assessment and checks at the vehicle. Follow the supported writing procedure and record the relevant diagnostic observations. Where measurements are required, agree their purpose and conditions before collecting them. A successful transfer message from the tool is part of the process, not the entire assessment of the completed job.
Provide a clear route for technical feedback. The installed file, reproducible operating condition and agreed raw data should remain connected to the portal order. This gives the workshop and development a defined basis for the next step if a revision is needed.
Use the current file-service price and your own labour and direct costs when preparing the customer quotation. Account for assessment, reading, writing and verification rather than pricing only the download. The workshop cost calculator can help organise those inputs, but it does not predict demand or guarantee a margin. Once the technical routine is clear, discuss the proposed partnership and support arrangement with ECU-Tuningfiles or SL Performance.
